These balls are beacons to signal to the pilots of planes and helicopters the presence of the electric wires, especially of high voltage lines.
Everyday you go out into the street and you may have to see balloons hanging in the electrical cables, precisely in high tensions. What are they for?
We could not see them differently because these conductors are very small. The high voltage wires are about 3 centimeters in diameter. The guard wires themselves measure 13 millimeters in diameter. The beacons are placed on the wires which are the highest, usually on the guard wires (acting as lightning protection) or on the conductors themselves.
This signaling is used in critical and precise locations: near airports, at major river crossings or when the wires are higher than normal.
This signage is used all over the world. The large balls in question are red or white.
On a thread, the reds are placed on the other, the white ones or, alternate the colors on a same thread. They are large fluorescent balloons, fiberglass, which measure between 24 and 54 inches in diameter.
Painted aluminum cylinders or cones are also used. It is also possible to comb the pylons (supporting the wires) from top to bottom, alternating colors, to further indicate the danger.
